How the Extreme Makeover has Changed My Life!

By: Sheri J.

Change is tough! Changing your lifelong belief system that is main stream is even tougher. The Extreme Makeovers have made me aware of different changes that I have needed to make in my life to live healthier, happier, and more physically fit. This is my 6th Extreme Makeover and each Makeover has made incremental changes in my life and by association my family’s lives. My girls and I have been patients of Dr. Dan’s for almost 5 years. I found Dr. Dan because I was searching for a more natural way to correct my daughter’s ADHD than the medication Strattera she was using. I came and listened to the Doctor’s report that Dr. Dan gave and knew this was the path that I wanted her to take as well as the rest of my family. She has been off Strattera for almost 4 years now, is a sophomore in high school and achieved a 3.9 on her grades last semester. Between getting adjusted every week and by implementing things I’ve learned about eating from the Extreme Makeovers, she has no need for the medication. Seeing her reach her potential is a blessing!

During each Extreme Makeover I have been challenged to make changes in my life and eating habits. In the first Extreme Makeover I attended, I learned that I really didn’t eat as healthy as I thought. I challenged myself to stop drinking coffee and using artificial sweeteners. We were taught to make just 1% changes and that was what I tried to do. Each Extreme Makeover I have made changes and continued these changes. I started drinking half my body weight in ounces of water each day. Then I added ¼ tsp of salt to the first quart of water I drank each day for a natural detoxification. I started cooking with Coconut Oil and my family really liked it.

Next came changing out the meats we ate for Publix Greenwise meats. At first my husband wasn’t sure about that change, but now he insists it tastes sooo much better. I started reading labels and eliminating foods from my house that had bad fats and bad sugars, especially high fructose corn syrup. I made more and more 1% changes that were really adding up. These changes were making a big difference in my health as well as my family’s.

The biggest change in my life happened last May. I discovered a leak under my kitchen sink. Mold was growing behind my cabinets. My health was compromised by the mold. I had a VCS test done in Dr. Dan’s office. I failed it! I had passed it before so I knew there was a definite problem. I didn’t feel good and I couldn’t concentrate or focus. After failing the VCS test I was given the dreaded news, “You must go on the Advanced Healing Diet to get well.” Wow! I had tried to do this diet once before with my daughter several years before and failed miserably. At that time I didn’t know enough about how to do it and the support system at Dr. Dan’s was not as established as it is now. I started the Advanced Healing Diet immediately. Not only was the diet a challenge, but I no longer had a kitchen to cook in.

The insurance company gutted my 1958 kitchen and killed the mold. My kitchen was blocked off with plastic for more than a week. So, I cooked on the gas grill outside. The grill also had one burner that I could use pots and pans on. We got a convection/microwave oven (I only use the convection oven) that was eventually installed in our new kitchen. I washed my dishes, pots, and pans in the shower or bathroom sink. We mostly ate at home so that I could eat healthier and we could save money for the kitchen we now had to install. It was July before I had a workable unfinished kitchen. It was September before my kitchen was completed.

Since May, I have come a long way on the Advanced Healing Diet. It is now just the way I eat. My family is not eating anything different than me when I cook so they are also reaping the benefits of a good diet. My health is much better. I have lots of energy. I feel younger. I feel great and my head is not cloudy. I am still about 90% on the Advanced Healing Diet after 10 months. Dr. Fernandez said I could eat certain grains to help increase my BMI. I could not have been as successful on the Advanced Healing Diet without the knowledge that I gained from the Extreme Makeovers, Dr. Dan, Dr. Fernandez and the YFCC staff, the Ambassador Healing Diet Support Group (which I helped start) and my good friend Diana who is also on the Advanced Healing Diet and is my accountability partner.

This Extreme Makeover I set goals to increase my BMI (Dr. Fernandez said I needed to raise it), increase my exercise and eat more veggies. I started working out with Max twice a week (YFCC boot camps). He has helped me raise my BMI as well as my muscle mass, muscle tone, strength, and endurance. I am working on incorporating more veggies into my meals or snacks. I now drink the Green Vibrance and Vega every morning. It is my “coffee”. My body craves it. I also drink green veggie smoothies with added wheat grass almost every day.

Every Extreme Makeover gives me encouragement and surrounds me with like minded individuals that give me inspiration. In July 2010 you will see me at the next Extreme Makeover, because God isn’t finished with me yet!
